Bronze Medal Portrait Of Victor Hugo By Ringel d'Illzach

Very beautiful bronze medal dated 1884 representing Victor Hugo (1802-1885). The medal is fixed on a wooden base on which there is also an epitaph of the Lille poet Charles Manso: "This century which was great, this century will end... Your lute gave brilliance to its infinite glory, And on this twilight the future germinates, your genius shines" Jean-Désiré Ringel d'Illzach Illzach 1849 - Strasbourg, 1916. A student of Francois Jouffroy and Alexandre Falguière at the École des Beaux-Arts, he exhibited from 1873 to 1889 at the Salon des artistes français where he presented numerous bust and medallion portraits. His work as a medallist was particularly appreciated by the public, he received orders from the magazine L'Art and the State which made his reputation. Known for his medallions in various materials (bronze, terracotta, stoneware, glass paste) where hundreds of personalities from the artistic, literary, political and scientific worlds of his time are portrayed (Sarah Bernhardt, Auguste Rodin, Arago, Louis Pasteur, Camille Flammarion, Victor Hugo, Ferdinand de Lesseps, or Léon Gambetta). His works can be found at the Louvre Museum, the Orsay Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts in Bordeaux. Delivery for France: €20
