It is highly probable that this panel was used in a more complex pictorial device, and therefore placed in conjunction with another panel depicting the virgin, and given the particular vanishing point of the representation of Sotto in Sù, we hypothesize that it was placed at the top of the central panel of a devotional altarpiece of much greater complexity.
This model may have been executed around 1520 by Della Porta's most faithful helpers and heirs, namely Fra Paolino da Pistoia or Giovanni Antonio Sogliani, who were often authorized to use the master's preparatory drawings. The figure of the angel refers precisely to the aesthetic canons, permeated by attention to detail and full of solemn devotion handed down in the school of San Marco at the beginning of the 16th century, also the chromaticity refers to the works of Fra Paolino
