Though Couturier painted poultry and farmyards compositions from the start of his career, it was only in later years that this genre began to occupy an essential place in his body of work. Each painting features the similar accessories and atmosphere

Philibert Léon Couturier is a French animal painter and a famous portrait painter of the 19th century. Born on May 26th, 1823 in Chalon-sur-Saône, this son of vinegar-maker is allowed in the School of Fine Arts of Paris in 1844.

Connected to the School of Barbizon, close friend of Théophile Gautier, he becomes a portrait and animal painter. He is particularly considered as the skill of his art to represent poultry and farmyards. A part of his works is hung in the museums of Chalon-sur-Saône (Denon museum), Saint-Quentin (Antoine Lécuyer museum), Montpelier, Nice, Reims and Poitiers.
