Pewter wine pitcher, baluster shape with foot and quarter-round goblet, with acorn thumb.
Very worn, illegible and uninterpretable master's mark on the lid.
Gauge mark dated 1783.
Height: 20.3 cm.
VALAIS, End of the 18th century

In good used condition
These pitchers were the wine measures of the Ancien Régime. The gauge of those used in public places, inns, drinking establishments, etc. had to be checked periodically by "gauging inspectors" in order to ensure "good measurement" for the consumer. The one presented here was therefore validated in 1783.
