"Oak Wood Sculpture "evangelist" 15th / 16th Century. "
Wooden sculpture (oak) representing an evangelist. Tiny traces of gilding or polychromy. Very good quality of sculpture. The face of the character is still very "medieval" in its aesthetic as well as the face of a winged angel adorning the seat. Of modest size (22cm high) this object gives off an intense presence. It must have originally been the element of an altarpiece type set. The drapery is superb. The expression of the character is intense and sensitive. A piece of the left foot and the base are formerly redone otherwise beautiful original condition. The detail of the right foot, resting on a volute of the seat and slightly inclined is a sign of quality. I announce it dating from the 16th century but possibly older. The choice of oak wood suggests a production from Normandy, Ile de France or North of France. The origin may also be Flemish ... I will not decide the question. In any case, it is a sculpture with a great and touching presence.
