Basile Lemeunier (1855-1920), is a French painter who followed the academic courses of Amédée Hédin and Alexandre Cabanel. A student of Édouard Detaille, he exhibited at the Salon from 1876. Our painting dates from this first period (1878). He painted scenes of contemporary life, genre scenes and street scenes as well as portraits. Rewarded with an honorable mention at the Universal Exhibition of 1889 and a bronze medal at that of 1900, he obtained a second class medal at the Salon of 1907, then passed out of competition.
