Biography
The son of a haulier, Abel Bertram learned the rudiments of his art in his hometown before moving to Lille, where he studied for three years at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in the studio of Pharaon de Winter (1849-1924)2 before being admitted to the Ecole Beaux-Arts de Paris in the studio of Léon Bonnat (1833-1922).
In 1900, he moved to the Ponthieu region, but maintained his links with the capital, as in 1904 he had his studio at no. 59 rue Caulaincourt, and in 1908 at no. 10 rue Seveste. In 1923 and 1928, he lived at no. 23 boulevard Gouvion-Saint-Cyr in Paris.
In 1901, he made the acquaintance of Antoine Guillemet, who gave him invaluable advice on how to work from the motif.
He painted landscapes, nudes (Nu assis, Musée d'Art Moderne, Paris), and seascapes in the Finistère region, in a fauve style tempered by gray skies and misty horizons. He settled permanently in Paris in 1927, returning regularly to Saint-Omer to paint Picardy landscapes.
A member of the Salon d'Automne, he exhibited regularly there and at the Salon des Tuileries, and in 1926 took part in the Indépendants retrospective with his paintings Le Livre, La petite Eva, Sortie de maison and Rue de village. At the Indépendants in 1927, he exhibited L'eau jaune and L'eau verte, followed in 1928 by Baigneuse and Nu couché, and in 1929 by a nude and another unnamed canvas.
At the Société nationale des beaux-arts, he exhibited as an hors-concours3.
He died at his home, 23 boulevard Gouvion-Saint-Cyr, on August 3, 1954.
