Alexis-Joseph Mazerolle (1826-1889) was one of the most sought-after artists of his generation. His fame extended beyond the French borders, and his works were exported as far as Naples, New York and Sydney. An academic decorative painter, he was solicited by princes, politicians and major industrialists to decorate their private mansions, while the State and various municipalities commissioned monumental works from him. Mazerolle thus created ceilings and stage curtains for several prestigious venues, including the Baden-Baden theatre, the Grand Théâtre d'Angers, the Opéra Garnier, the Conservatoire d'art dramatique and the Bourse de commerce in Paris, which still hold vast compositions by the master.
