"Painting Alice And Bertram In Front Of A Calvary Cross, Scene From The Opera Robert Le Diable"
Very interesting painting representing a scene from the opera "Robert le diable", an opera in five acts by Giacomo Meyerbeer, a major work of musical romanticism in France at the beginning of the 19th century. It was performed for the first time on November 21, 1831 in the Salle Peletier at the Paris Opera. Our painting certainly represents a passage from Act III where we can see Alice holding the cross of a Calvary not far from the entrance to the vaults and asking Bertram to leave, all against a mountainous background and the rocks of Sainte-Irène. Our oil on canvas has a small repair on the back (see photo), no signature present.
