Fauteuil à la Reine
Beech relacquered, pegged joints
Stamped and trace of label on back rail
Dimensions: H. 90.5 ; W. 61 ; D. 51.5 (cm.)
Paris, circa 1785
Large armchair à la Reine, resting on four tapered, fluted and filleted legs. Finely molded belt, rounded connecting dice. Fluted baluster armrests with palmettes.
This classicist-influenced model is due to the genius of master craftsman Georges Jacob. It can be dated by several royal deliveries: the first dates from 1786, for the Pavillon Balbi of the Comte de Provence, “six fauteuils de forme nouvelle”, in half-cabriolet form. The second was for Marie-Antoinette in her entresol apartment at the Tuileries. Finally, a number of seats delivered for the Duc de Penthièvre at the Château d'Amboise are very similar to ours.
