This pair of patinated bronze caryatids from the Empire period was made in France around 1810.
They were used to support a piece of furniture and probably adorned a bed. Its neoclassical style and the quality of the cast iron and chasing are reminiscent of the work of the bronze-maker Pierre-Philippe Thomire. He supplied candelabras, centrepieces and furniture frames to Charles Percier, Napoleon's architect and decorator. The last image shows an example of a bronze made by Thomire for Napoleon's bed at the Château de Malmaison.
