"Senju Kannon - 1000 Hands Bodhisattva, Japan, Edo Era, 18th - 19th Century. "
Gilded wooden sculpture of Senju Kannon or "1000-armed" Kannon. This is an esoteric form of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, first appearing in India in the 7th century AD. Its oldest Japanese representation dates from 752 and comes from the Fujii Dera temple in Osaka. It was common to pray to the figure of Senju Kannon to avoid illness and vision problems. These figures rarely had 1,000 arms, more often much less, each arm being supposed to symbolize the next. The statue rests on a base decorated with rocks and lotus leaves. Behind the figure is a carved mandorla - a halo.
