Virgin Of Calvary - Flanders - 16th Century

Executed in Flanders in the 16th century, this Virgin of Calvary was placed to the right of Christ, matching Saint John at the foot of the cross.
The Virgin is depicted standing in an attitude ''a contrapposto'' which illustrates the image in a more flexible and lively way than a completely frontal and frozen posture could elicit.

She is wearing a dress with a round neckline, fitted under the chest. Her veil forming a cloak, of which she holds a piece that she has passed under her left arm, falls in a cascade on the front in deep broken folds.
With her hands joined, the Virgin tilts her head slightly to the left, her gaze lowered. The expression on her face is all restraint, marked by great gentleness and profound wisdom.
