The imposing shafts, with a triangular profile, feature on their plates:
*PROFILES OF ROMAN EMPERORS in Tondo, according to a classic iconography of the Regency period,
*but the candlesticks are also this time framed by busts of CARYATIDS, with Indian hair and as if placed on sheaths, in a pure Louis XIV style.
The sockets themselves seem clearly Louis XVI style.
Revisiting the various successive 18th century styles, themselves referring to antique references, the 19th cty goldsmiths freely used and mixed various decorative registers and created a teeming and opulent aesthetic characteristic of the period.
The candlesticks, very heavy, are gilded with mercury and are of a very fine execution and chiselling, in the spirit of the creations of Robert-Joseph Auguste (1723-1805) on Louis XVI period
Very good condition. Quite deep scratches of the gilding under the round bases of the candlesticks, and traces of varnish (?) under one of them (please check photo)
The gilding is however in remarkable condition, with the minimal exception of the narrowest part in diameter under one of the sockets
Dimensions
27,5cm high and 15,7cm in diameter
A great presence for this elegant pair of candlesticks, ideal for the decoration of a table, a very beautiful console or an 18th century chest of drawers.
