Object description :

"Pair Of Régence Walnut Armchairs, Early 18th Century Circa 1720 - 1730"
Pair of Regency period armchairs in molded, carved and waxed walnut wood; high and wide straight back, slightly inclined and curved at the top. The armrests are straight with padded cuffs. The armrests are flared with scrolls raised with foliage. The whole is recessed in the lower part of the back and rests on a console support called "à reculant gallant" decorated with twining foliage inserted into the side crosspiece set back from the front base. Wide scalloped belt on all sides, strongly curved on the front and flared on its sides. The whole is embellished with fine sculptures of leafy shells and lambrequins with volutes enriched with gadrooned foliage and tangled scrolls. The whole resting on a base freed from spacers while being lightened by a camber, punctuated by a scroll raised with acanthus leaves. This model of armchair testifies to the evolution of the seat during the Regency period. From the grand siècle, we keep the high, wide, inclined and entirely covered in fabric backs as well as the ample seats, but to these elements are combined novelties due to the trends started at the twilight of the reign of the Sun King. Less solemnity and rigor in favor of more comfort more softness; a philosophy dear to this beginning of the century. It is worth noting the great care taken with the connecting elements of an irreproachable quality. Balance, nervousness, elegance and quality are the most appropriate terms for this very beautiful pair of seats halfway between firesides and comfortable bergères. Observations: Excellent condition, restorations of use and maintenance, complete restoration of the upholstery with a bowl filled with soft cushions and a backrest mounted on paintings. All covered with an Italian damask of the most beautiful effect. Period: 18th century around 1720 - 1730. Dimensions Total height 111.8cm Seat height (bowl) 44.8cm - (cushion) 58cm Backrest width 56cm Seat width 66.8cm (cushion) Seat depth 50.5cm (cushion)
