Importante Vierge à l'Enfant 106 Cm Région Vosges En Bois Polychrome époque 17ème

Superb crowned virgin, virgin and child in polychrome wood. 17th century period,  Originally from the Vosges, Vittel / Neufchâteau region. The crown symbolizes celestial royalty, the Virgin is the “Queen of Heaven”. The Child Jesus is sitting on Mary's left arm, he holds in his left hand a ball symbolizing the world, Jesus savior of the World. The folds of the clothes are rich and nervous, they bring a feeling of movement and depth. The back is raw, which suggests that this statue was originally installed in a niche or against a wall. The gaze of the Virgin, oriented downwards, indicates that she was probably fixed at a height, she looks at us with kindness.  Good condition in relation to its age, numerous layers of polychromy, chipped in places. Sculpture well in the tradition and lineage of the Lorraine Gothic virgins of the 14th and 15th centuries.  We are here in the presence of rural and popular production, later, probably 16th or even 17th.  Moving, sincere, it touches us at first sight.
