"Xylogravure Strasbourg Cathedral Daniel Meyer (1908-1993)"
Beautiful woodcut by Daniel Meyer representing a view of Strasbourg with its cathedral. Daniel Meyer was born in Mulhouse in 1908 and died in Nancy in 1993. Attracted to sculpture very early on, at the age of 17, he took classes at the Ecole des Arts décoratifs in Strasbourg. At the same time, he learned wood engraving from the Alsatian master H. Bacher. After a brief stay in Paris, he came to Nancy where he continued to diversify his activities: copper engraving, painting; he produced many bookplates, which led him to be one of the founding members of the French Association of Bookplate Collectors, of which he was president for many years. In 1938, he was a professor of modeling and sculpture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nancy where he taught for thirty-five years. His work is important. He made many busts - his can be seen in the Sainte-Marie park in Nancy - statues, especially nudes, such as "Aurore" exhibited in the entrance hall of the General Council of Meurthe et Moselle. His engravings are also diverse, more than 400, and demonstrate recognized artistic qualities. Several bronze busts and medallions, works by Meyer, who want to honor the memory of old masters who have passed away, adorn the walls of the Faculty of Medicine of Nancy or hospitals in the city.
