"Bronze Holy Water Font"
Beautiful size for this 19th century bronze holy water font. Central decoration in low relief of a cross on which a vine climbs, four flames surround it. Two angels in greater relief standing on clouds, one on the left holding a miter, the other on the right holding a crozier. Five angels' heads in the upper part in a radiant decoration. At the foot of the cross the basin of the holy water font closed by a lid mounted on a hinge in the shape of a scallop shell, symbol of baptism. In the lower part a snake biting an apple. The casting as well as the chiseling of the metal are of very good quality. Dimensions of the holy water font: 30 cm X 22 cm. This holy water font is fixed on a panel of wood veneered in imitation of ebony, some insect holes, now disappeared, in the upper part. Molded frame strip, Louis XIV style cutout in the upper part. The back has been repainted in black, visible veneer jumps, the whole remains stable. I am not sure that the wooden panel is from the same period as the holy water font. Note: Polished mainly on the reliefs, beautiful shine of the bronze. Delivery: €15 for mainland France.
