Francis Cox was a painter of urban subjects, landscapes and beach scenes. Details of his life and work are somewhat limited. He appears to have married in the Ipswich area in 1940. Subsequently, he and his wife Dora lived in South Africa, where his works occasionally appear at auction. They returned to England in February 1947. In 1947 and 1948, he painted beach scenes, notably of Hastings in Sussex. He is known to have exhibited his work later at the famous London dealers Roland, Browse & Delbanco. Over the next thirty years his work became more abstract. Francis Cox had a barge on the Seine for a time, then moved to Corsica and then Italy.
