The Charles HALPHEN company is the inventor of Alfénide, a metal alloy mimicking silver without the drawback of corrosion. Founded in 1850, it became a major supplier to Charles CHRISTOFLE, who was its principal shareholder from 1853. HALPHEN provided silver-plated Alfénide pieces to CHRISTOFLE by galvanization until 1877.
In 1888, the HALPHEN company was acquired by CHRISTOFLE.
The "Alfénide" hallmark in full letters, alongside CHRISTOFLE hallmarks, was used from 1862 to 1877.
