Albert Claes-Thobois (Claes-Florian) is a Belgian artist born in Ixelles in 1883 and died in Schaerbeek in 1945. Painter, draftsman, watercolourist and wood engraver. He studied at the Brussels Academy under the direction of C. Montald and H. Richier (1896-1897 and 1901-1903). He produced landscapes, views of cities and parks, figures, still lifes and flowers. His painting was initially impressionist, but from around 1920, he evolved towards a more synthesized drawing. He also had a cubist period and was influenced by Russian modernism. He illustrated poems by A. Verhaeren (The Afternoon Hours, 1923). He exhibited in several galleries, including the Le Centaure gallery in Brussels in 1922, with L'Esthétique Nouvelle in Brussels in 1921 and the Brussels Literary Circle in 1925.
