"Crucifix In Precious Wood Inlaid With Mother-of-pearl. China, 19th Century."
This type of crucifix was created in large quantities for Vietnamese, Chinese and other Christians. The shape and decorations are always similar and the mother-of-pearl patterns are inlaid in a beautiful rosewood. These are usually Vietnamese creations. The crucifix presented here is carved in a different wood which seems to us to be rosewood, Chinese Huang-Hualy, which allows us to think that it was created in the south of China, perhaps in Macao and not in Vietnam, which is much rarer. A few years ago, in a period of great euphoria, a similar crucifix, carved in the same wood was sold by a famous auction house for €28,000. We will find the documentation if necessary. Height approximately 42cm thickness 2cm. Good condition. We also offer on our site a similar but Vietnamese crucifix in rosewood at a much lower price; it is interesting to observe the differences other than the woods; The Chinese crucifix is thicker, the mother-of-pearl is more colorful, the tendril inlays are generally cut in one piece and the chiseling is more careful. However, there are also Vietnamese crucifixes of excellent quality but always on rosewood.
