This statuette represents a bearded old man, seated, dressed in a loose tunic and wearing a turban. With his arms crossed, he seems absorbed in his thoughts, his posture marked by calm and reflection.
Work of the Danish neoclassical sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844), it was made around 1821. The plaster original is kept at the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen.
Thorvaldsen is one of the most emblematic figures of neoclassicism, an artistic movement inspired by Greek and Roman antiquity. He distinguished himself with his monumental sculptures and portraits, and acquired an international reputation, particularly in Rome, where he created major works such as the statue of "Christ" and the group "Jason". Highly respected by his contemporaries, he had a profound influence on 19th-century art, and his works still adorn many public places today, particularly in Copenhagen.
