The Académie de la Grande Chaumière (which had its very first premises on the Quai des Orfèvres) was established in the heart of the Montparnasse artistic district at the beginning of the 20th century. Dedicated to painting and sculpture from life models for women artists, it paved the way for independent art, freeing artists from academic tendencies. Famous teachers included Bourdelle, Zadkine, Fernand Léger... as well as students such as Modigliani, Giacometti ,Calder ...
