"Curiosity – Repoussé Iron Fragment: Devil, Siamese Lion, Anthropomorphic – 18th Century"
Late 17th-Early 18th century France? This fragment in repoussé iron intrigues with its unique and almost theatrical character. It presents a striking representation: two Siamese lion heads with anthropomorphic faces, frozen in an almost human expression, mixing majesty and strangeness. Made of repoussé iron, this traditional technique consisted of working the metal from the back in order to create detailed volumes and reliefs. Here, the features of the two lions are finely sculpted, their wide-open eyes seeming to scrutinize us, while their manes unfurl in dynamic and expressive waves. A decorative rosette punctuates the base of the fragment, adding a refined ornamental touch. It is difficult to determine precisely the primary function of this piece. Was it an architectural decorative element, part of a monumental door knocker, or perhaps even a detail from a large-scale piece of goldsmithing? What is certain is that it exudes an undeniable visual force, mixing animal symbolism and anthropomorphic expression. The lion, traditionally a symbol of power, courage and protection, takes on an almost theatrical dimension here with its humanized features. This fusion between man and animal evokes a deeper symbolism, perhaps linked to an allegorical representation. Condition and Conservation: This fragment has a natural old patina, with traces of wear that testify to its age and history.
