Francis MONTANIER (1895-1974) Still life with blue vase Oil on panel signed and dated 1951 lower left dimensions 38 x 46 cm Frame by Emile Bouche branded with iron He began his artistic studies in Lyon in 1912, which were interrupted from 1915 to 1920 by the war, in which he took part. He then resumed his studies in Lyon, working at the same time as a glass painter and goldsmith. Having won the Prix de Paris, he settled the same year in the capital to devote himself fully to painting and engraving. He was a student of Ernest Laurent. In 1924, he won the Prix de Rome for engraving, which allowed him a long stay in Rome, where he devoted himself mainly to painting. Derain gave him his studio near the Parc Montsouris in Paris. He became friends with Georges Braque. Starting from figuration with landscapes, still lifes and nudes, he evolved more clearly, after the Second World War, in the direction of a sensitive and harmonious abstraction. Instead of copying shapes and colors, he tried to transpose them by equivalences in a solid and firm manner. Always in relation to the reality of the visible, his themes diversified and became more precise over the years: cliffs, sea, trees, goats ..
