Bronze applique
Veneto, 17th century
h. cm. 38
Elegant applique in dark patinated bronze modeled as a half-figure of an angel with a circular drip tray at the top and an evocative volute shelf at the bottom.
In excellent general condition, the applique recalls the model motion of Nicolò Roccatagliata present in the Basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, designed by A. Palladio and built between 1560 and 1580. Roccatagliata also created bronze figures of Saint Stephen and Saint George as well as door handles for the choir of the basilica, which are very similar in shape to the applique offered here. The sculptor Nicolò Roccatagliata, originally from Genoa, worked in Venice and, in collaboration with Cesare Groppo, created six small bronze candlesticks. Also for S. Giorgio Maggiore and together with Groppo he cast two large bronze candelabra. Roccatagliata and his son Sebastiano created a large bronze relief for San Moisè in Venice.
