Charles Lailler (1822-1893), then a doctor at the Hôpital Saint-Louis, invited Jules Baretta (1833-1923), then a papier-mâché fruit maker, to join his department in 1863. Baretta quickly excelled in his ceroplasty technique and came up with waxes that matched the various clinical dermatological pathologies he encountered. In 1884, he was officially appointed curator of the Musée de l'Hôpital de Saint Louis, where he produced more than 2,000 casts. In 1889, Jules Baretta was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour.
