The Aconit (D609) was a frigate of the French Navy between 1973 and 1997. Built for the Navy during the Cold War, it took the name of the old corvette Aconit which fought in the Free French Naval Forces during the Second World War.
"La Quille" was the boat which at the end of the 19th century, brought back to France the convicts released from the penal colony of Cayenne. "To have the Quille" therefore meant to be freed. It was at the beginning of the 20th century that the army took over this symbol. Thus was established the tradition of making a wooden, bronze, or brass keel to mark the end of one's military service. The last days under the flags were often devoted to making the keel which therefore symbolizes the end of military service. Each soldier personalizes it according to his weapon, his regiment but also his regional origin and his creativity. Some were covered with all sorts of symbols: badges, fourragères, golden nails, mottos, number of the incorporation class, number of the last unit, or even bawdy symbols.
