"Original Drawing 17th Century: Fête Galante, Attributed To Jan Lis, Johann Liss, Baroque Painter"
Original drawing from the 17th century. Scene of a gallant party. Red chalk. 23 x 35 cm, mounted on a 27.8 x 41.7 cm marie-louise. Foxing. Bears a signature (apocryphal?) "Jan Lis" in graphite in the lower left corner. This signature refers to the baroque painter Johann Liss, born in Germany. He studied in Holland and Rome where he was influenced by the Caravaggio style. He worked mainly in Venice where he died of the plague in 1629. "He loved good food and wasted a lot of time satisfying his taste for pleasures. [...] Although some historical paintings are cited of him, he mainly painted pleasant subjects: interiors of inns, masquerades, bathers, etc." (Bénézit, V, 600). His works are kept in the great European museums. Ref. EB-1419
