"Oil On Orientalist Panel Signed Victor Huguet (1835 - 1902) "
Victor-Pierre Huguet was a painter of his time. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, then a student of the orientalist painter Eugène Fromentin (1820 - 1876) in Paris, Victor Huguet was an adult in the middle of the century when the doors of the Orient were opening to artists. Delacroix preceded him in 1832 and Huguet probably did not miss the famous painter's enthusiasm for these new horizons. Following this example and in the footsteps of Vivant Denon, Huguet embarked for Egypt in 1852. Then, he left for Crimea in 1853. From then on, he became passionate about the countries of North Africa and made many trips to sketch their landscapes and scenes of life. He made his debut at the Salons of Marseille and Paris in 1859, then presented his works from 1893 at the Society of French Orientalist Painters. As he acquired a real knowledge of the Orient, we see his style lose its smooth academicism to better render the bright and colorful bursts of these distant countries.
Our genre scene is on the cusp of this change and if the technique is perfectly mastered in the landscape and the composition, we see a certain freedom emerging in the treatment of water and clothing.
