Virgin Enthroned with Child between Saints Peter and Saint Paul
terracotta tile modeled in bas-relief
54 x 44 cm
As already in the marble panel of the Arezzo Cathedral created by Francesco di Simone Ferrucci, here too our sculptor uses the stylistic expedient of the trefoil niche to frame the characters. In this case a Virgin seated with the Child upon whom the dove of the Holy Spirit descends, surrounded by angels. The architectural tympanum that surmounts it is supported by fluted Corinthian columns. On the sides, St. Peter and St. Paul keep watch with the usual attributes of keys and sword. The strong classicism of late antique taste, which pervades this relief, suggests a profound knowledge of Roman antiquities, and a consequent possible Capitoline provenance, by searching among those sculptors active in the papal sphere around the end of the 15th century.
