Two painted photographic portraits of a couple in two very beautiful gilded frames with a period floral motif. Signed Mayer frères Format Photographie : 14 x 18 cm Format cadre : 34 x 42 cm The brothers Léopold-Ernest (1817-1895) and Louis-Frédéric MAYER were among the first photographers to set up their studio in Paris, rue de la Scellerie then rue Colebert, passage Verdeau and finally boulevard des capucines when they merged with the studio of Pierre-Louis PIERSON in 1855. In 1853, Emperor Napoleon III visited the studio and appointed Ernest Mayer photographer-artist to the Emperor. On its advertisement, the Mayer frères house describes itself as follows: Sole specialty for colored portraits, daguerreotype miniatures by Messrs. Mayer, painters, members of several Academies and creators of the Athénée de photographie. Inventors and manufacturers of colors for the daguerreotype.
