"French School Circa 1880 : “le Chouan”"
French school circa 1880: "The Chouan with the torch", oil on mahogany panel 25 X 14.3 cm, mounted in a blackened wooden frame 30 X 19.5 cm (wear). Slight lack at the bottom left hidden by the rebate, small scratches. Close to the Vendéens who were rather on the left bank of the Loire, the Chouans were on the right bank. Their fight against the republican armies was initiated by the mass conscription demanded by the Revolution which led to a revolt and a shift on the royalist side. Our character wears on the back the insignia of the Sacred Heart which was their emblem. Do not hesitate to ask us for photos or additional information by email or telephone.
