"[grimod De La Reynière] - Philosophical Reflections On Pleasure By A Bachelor. 1784."
[GRIMOD DE LA REYNIÈRE (Alexandre-Balthazard-Laurent)] - Philosophical reflections on pleasure by a bachelor. Followed by The Fakir and Epistle of the bachelor to Madame de ***, sending her the Philosophical Lorgnette. Lausanne, Constantinople and Sl, Libraires Associés, from the Imprimerie du Muphti et s.é., 1784-1785; in-8, 136 + 24 + 8, full marbled calf binding of the time, decorated smooth spine, edges painted in red, title piece in red morocco. Piroux bookplate. Collection of several texts by the same author. The first text is in the third edition. A curious work whose author is said to have published a fabulous banquet to promote these philosophical reflections. The author is more known for his love of gastronomy than for his philosophical thoughts in which he seeks to prove that one can remain a philosopher even when in love. He had a rather incredible life with exiles and duels. He was described in his time as "the most determined gastronome of his century".
