Bust of Ferdinando II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (1610-1670)
bronze sculpture
height: 75 cm
This bronze, probably made in Florence as a decorative element for a Medici palace, and a later replica of Foggini's original which however does not lose the late Baroque intensity and vigor deriving from Bernini's influence.
Ferdinand II is portrayed as an adult.
The artist was able to capture his acute nature and lively intelligence in his large, wide eyes, his spacious forehead, his pronounced nose, his full lips, his wavy moustache and his baldness compensated by his long hair left loose on his shoulders. Portrayed as a leader with richly decorated armour, he also wears a widely draped cloak.
