Black lacquered wooden Whist marker with flower and bird decorations in gold lacquer, ivory markers with mother-of-pearl insect inlays and semi-precious stones in the Shibayama technique. Work from Japan from the Meiji period (1868-1912) for import into the United Kingdom. Dimensions 9.5 x 6 cm Whist is a card game of English origin. The original whist had its heyday in the 18th and 19th centuries. The name whist comes from an English interjection calling for silence. It was played by English high society.
