French school circa 1900: "Gemmeurs dans les Landes", oil on canvas 29.5 X 39 cm, mounted in a German gilded frame 36 X 46 cm. Very small restoration at the top in the middle, cracks, tone-on-tone traces at the bottom right which could be a signature, but without certainty. This adorable naive painting represents a rarely covered subject: the tapping of pine trees to extract the precious resin which will be used to make turpentine and rosin. While two tappers make notches on the trunk, a flock of sheep rest in the shade and the shepherds bundle up in the background...
