"Budai With Base, Wood, China, Qing Dynasty, 19th Century. "
This wooden sculpture depicts a seated, bald Buddhist monk whose robe covers his bare belly. Budai appeared in Chinese iconography during the Song Dynasty and his prototype was probably an eccentric monk Qieci (契此) living in the 10th century. This non-canonical image of the Buddha is a symbol of happiness and prosperity not only in Far East Asia, but also in other parts of the world. Budai holds a necklace in his right hand and another unidentified object in his left hand.
