Object description :

"Silk And Indian Quilt, Chinese Interlocking Pattern From Jouy-en-josas Circa 1795"
Circa 1790-1795 Provence Rare example of a Provencal window quilt, in chintz called imbriqué motif au Chinois from the Oberkampf Manufactory in Jouy-en-Josas around 1790-1791. This is an Indian printed on a nine-color woodblock that has retained its chintz finish, among the first editions produced by the Royal Manufactory for the Provencal market at the end of the 18th century. The imbricated scale decoration is a direct reference to the Indian chintz of the Coromandel coast, taking up the floral and vermiculated designs of the palampores, but which is also inspired by Chinese Qing art through an orientalist and sublimated vision of what is called "Chinoiserie" (presence of a crane). The quilt was shortened during the same period, mixing a Zig-zag quilted valve in lime or celadon green silk taffeta, with a quilt lined with partially lost wool brocaded cambrasine. This is a fine example of Provençal folk art and regionalism dating from the end of the 18th century. The green silk has a few scratches on the ridges and a few micro stains, the only defects to report, the Oberkampf Indian fabric being in remarkable condition. You will not see this type of thing for sale on the antique market again, except by incredible luck. Good structural condition. Dimensions: 165 cm x 150 cm. The window in toile de Jouy 93 cm x 78 cm. Reference: Similar Indian fabric white background at the Musée d'histoire de Marseille. Published in Toiles de Jouy by Josette Brédif - Adam Biro 1989, page 118-119.
