"Gabriel Augizeau, Oil On Canvas "marine Des Sables d'Olonne", Mid 20th Century"
Very pretty seascape signed Gabriel Augizeau, a Vendée painter from the first half of the 20th century, depicting two fishing boats, including a flamboyant tuna boat at anchor along the quai des boucaniers with the Tour d'Arundel in Les Sables d'Olonne in the background. This painting has a beautiful depth of field created by the perspective of the boats in the foreground, the tower in the center and the horizon line in the distance where sky and ocean merge, like an invitation to set sail like the sailors setting off on a solo round-the-world trip as part of the legendary Vendée Globe race. Built at the entrance to the port of Les Sables d'Olonne in the 14th century by the princes of Talmont, the Tour d'Arundel is the keep of the former Château Saint-Clair. At its summit located at 32 meters high is a lighthouse, the oldest light on the Vendée coast since its existence is mentioned in a letter dating from 1593, but also the only one until the 18th century. The port of Les Sables d'Olonne, the sailing boats, the Vendée coast were the favorite subjects of the painter Gabriel Augizeau, born in 1894 and died in 1963.
