"Under The Arbor Before Dinner "

Oil on canvas signed bottom left Marcel Rieder. Marcel Rieder, is a French painter born in 1862 in Thann in Alsace, and died in Villiers sous Grez in 1942. Trained at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1883 to 1939 and was awarded many medals there. From 1900 he specialized in intimate scenes of family life: tables set before dinner under a warm light of an oil lamp, or in an early evening atmosphere under an arbor are subjects that will guarantee him real success. He stayed several times in Annecy around 1919-1920, and the tranquility of the lakeside would be a source of inspiration for some of his most beautiful works. His journey also led him to paint in Brittany, Holland and Italy. Works by Rieder are present in many museums in France and the United States.
