Revolutionary and officer of the Irish Legion of Napoleon.
Lawless was appointed captain when Bonaparte formed the Irish Legion in 1803.
In August 1809, when General Monet capitulated, Lawless escaped from the city with the eagle of his regiment, hid for two months in a doctor's house, and found the opportunity to go to Antwerp by fishing boat at night.
Marshal Bernadotte (Jean Baptiste Jules Bernadotte) welcomed him, mentioned him in the general orders and reported his exploits to Napoleon, who summoned him to Paris.
Napoleon awarded him the Legion of Honor and promoted him to lieutenant-colonel.
In 1812, he obtained the rank of colonel.
On August 21, 1813, at the Battle of Lowenberg, Lawless was seriously wounded.
He retired to his country house in Tours.
General Lawless died on December 25, 1824.
He is buried in Père Lachaise.
