Powerful tambua (also called Tombua) from the Fiji Islands dating from the 19th century.

Superb yellowed patina and original hanging thread in coconut fibers.

Note: Tambua is the most valuable means of exchange in Fiji, it was used for important transactions such as paying the bride price for example and was also offered for births, deaths, weddings or other festivities. When Queen Elizabeth II visited Fiji in the 1950s, the President of the island offered her a whale's tooth. Being offered a tambua is a great honor in Fiji.
