'THE FISHERMAN'S WIFE'
ORIGINAL ARTWORK BY THE ITALIAN SCULPTOR GIOSUÈ ARGENTI (1819-1901)
(Artwork signed on the back)
Artwork in White Statuary CARRARA Marble dated 1867
History of the sculptor and the work:
Giosuè Argenti (1819 - 1901)
He attended the Brera Academy, having as teachers Pompeo Marchesi, Abbondio Sangiorgio, Francesco Somaini and Benedetto Cacciatori for sculpture, and Luigi Sabatelli for painting;
He participated in the most important artistic events in Italy and abroad.
He was a prolific artist, among the main exponents of Lombard Romanticism.
The Galleria d'Arte in Milan preserves Episode of the Destruction of Jerusalem (1850), Zenobia from the Arazze River (1852), which testify to his initial neoclassicism, and The Immaculate Conception, which marks the transition from purism to virtuosity.
In 1866 he created the monument to Gaudenzio Ferrari in Valduggia and the following year he was named Knight of the Legion of Honor of France for being awarded at the International Exhibition in Paris with the statue The Sleep of Innocence.
He obtained other important recognitions in Italy and executed the monument to Cavour for Vercelli and the statues of the four Apostles on the left for the pronaos of the Cathedral of the same city.
He worked for the factory of the Cathedral of Milan, for which he created some Saints, for the facade of the Cathedral of Ivrea and for the Cathedral of Cremona.
His activity in the field of funerary sculpture is also worth mentioning: see in particular the allegorical figure of Sculpture for the monument to Andrea Boni and the statue of Protection for the aedicule of Alberto Keller, at the Monumental Cemetery of Milan (1876).
From 1875 to 1879 he taught sculpture at Brera.
