Large Statue of Saint Anthony the Great, or Saint Anthony Abbot of the 17th Century.
Important and rare lime statue representing Saint Anthony the Great.
This is the Saint Anthony who was an anchorite, when he was a hermit and entrenched in a cave.
It is this saint who suffered the temptation of the demon and who is often found in paintings containing painted scenes representing the temptations of Saint Anthony. These paintings are often a pretext for representing the demon in the form of various infernal monsters and lascivious women, while Saint Anthony remains imperturbable.
Look at representations such as that of Hieronymus Bosch for example for his temptations of Saint Anthony in Lisbon.
Our lime statue dates from the end of the 17th century and Saint Anthony appears in the form of an elderly man leaning on the Tau and holding the holy book.
At his feet stands his animal that is attributed to him in classical iconography the pig and flames seem to come from below, from the earth or from hell. everything is symbolic!
the face is superb, full of nobility and firmness, the composition of the drapery is very beautiful. some slight remains of polychromy.
the two hands with the tau and the holy book were redone in the 19th century. otherwise good general condition.
the back shows marks of wood-eating insects but the statue has been entirely treated with xylophene, these are old traces and there are no more inhabitants.
