"Georges Brétegnier. Sketch On Canvas "young Woman From The Country Of Montbéliard" 42.7 X 33 Cm"
Georges Brétegnier. Attributed to. Sketch on canvas "young woman from the Montbéliard region" annotated bottom left sketch by Georges Bretegnier. Annotated on the Marie-Louise -Georges BRETEGNIER- French school. 42.7 X 33 cm. Georges Brétegnier (1860-1892) was a student of Jean-Léon Gérome (1824-1904) and Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891). The painter traveled to the Maghreb several times where he immortalized the customs and traditions of the countries he visited. Brétegnier's orientalist works are highly sought after on the market. The artist also depicted the Montbéliard region where he was from and its inhabitants. He particularly focused on making portraits of women among his fellow citizens, focusing on the traditional costumes of Montbéliard and in particular on the headdress called "diari". Our sketch is similar to the painting "Reading the Bible in a Home in the Country of Montbéliard", a regionalist work par excellence made in 1890 and hung on the walls of the Salon du Champ-de-Mars in 1892. Modern patinated wooden frame. Canvas without a stretcher. Accidents and missing material at the top left.
