Oil On Isorel By Macario Vitalis (1898-1989) The Musician - Guitarist format 18 cm x 13.4 cm - very beautiful oil by this excellent painter VITALIS biography Macario Vitalis (1898-1989) is a Filipino painter who worked in France from the 1920s to the mid-1980s, and more particularly in Puteaux then Plestin-les-Grèves (Côtes-d'Armor) in Brittany, a small coastal town whose landscapes and light he particularly appreciates. After studying at the Fine Arts schools of San Francisco and Philadelphia, he arrived in France in the mid-1920s. He then belonged to the Paris school and painted the Butte Montmartre and its surroundings. In the 1930s, he settled in Puteaux and assiduously frequented Camille Renault and the artists around him1. Having an American passport due to his membership in the Commonwealth of the Philippines, he was interned by the Germans from 1941 to 1944 at the Royallieu Camp in Compiègne2. His first contact with Brittany took place in 1946, following his participation in a holiday camp. He settled there in 1957, until his return to the Philippines where he died in 1989. Influenced by Jacques Villon, at the beginning of his career, he adopted a style inspired by cubism before returning to a style inspired by impressionism and then by pointillism. Some of his works are marked by abstraction. He focused on representing places well known to the people of Plestin (the Moallic Bridge, the Tour d'Argent manor, the red beacon of Pichodour in Toul an Héry, etc.). He also represented religious scenes (in particular crucifixions), daily life (orchestra, ballerinas) and some portraits. He clearly belongs to the post-war Breton school but also to Philippine painting, even though he left his country very young and returned there to die very late. He became famous at the end of his life, just before his return to his native country. A retrospective of his work was organized in Plestin and the Philippine Philippines ambassador to France and Philippine television went there3. A retrospective exhibition was organized at the Alliance Française in Manila in March 20114 and one on his Breton period in Plestin-les-Grèves from July 20 to August 15, 20165. In June 2017, the French Post Office dedicated a postage stamp to him on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and the Republic of the Philippines6. An article by Yves Coativy published in 20157 summarizes his Breton work3.
