"Ceremonial Or Wedding Chest In Carved Oak Normandy Late 16th Early 17th Century"
Large richly carved oak chest, middle of the facade with framed decoration of a mythological scene surmounted by two birds with outstretched wings. On either side, foliage, fruits and arabesques, in the upper corners, faun heads with goat legs present the scene by pointing to it with their outstretched arms. Uprights carved in high relief with caryatids, on the right a young man and on the left an elderly bearded man. Cherubs seem to support the base of the caryatids. Sides carved with a central medallion surrounded by rolled parchments and stylized papyrus leaves, caryatids form the rear uprights. Upper crosspiece carved with thick gadroons, lower cornice projecting entirely carved. Straight feet. Original lock.
Renaissance, last quarter of the 16th, first quarter of the 17th century.
Origin Normandy.
Good condition, some small losses and traces of use, old restorations and wear on the top.
