The artist
Jean Esprit Marcellin is one of the most important French academic sculptors of the 19th century. He was born in Gap (Hautes Alpes) in 1821, in a modest background. Financially supported by his city and his department, he moved to Paris where he joined the Ecole supérieure des beaux-arts. From 1847 until his death in 1884, he participated in all the salons of French artists. He has a prolific career, recognized by the State, which regularly commissions him. He has created several statues for the decor of the Louvre Museum, the Paris City Hall, the Sorbonne Church, etc. He was decorated with the Legion of Honor in 1862.
His works are featured in the greatest French and foreign museums, such as the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the National Gallery of Art in Washington (United States). The city of Gap named a square after him.
